Firebells And Fanfare Under Way!

The Firebells and Fanfare parade on Saturday, July 31st was a huge success!

A big thank you goes out to all of the visiting departments and collectors who brought trucks and other apparatus for the parade and show. Market Avenue was packed all afternoon as people were checking out all of the vehicles on display.

Next up is the pumping demonstration in City Park Sunday from 11am-3pm. Be sure to come down and see these trucks in action.

One of the highlights will be Victoria's 1899 Waterous steam pumper in action... Two years older than the one the Grand Forks volunteers are restoring, but fully functioning. Victoria's steam engineers will be stoking up a nice hot fire in the boiler to run the pump -- they claim they can shoot water 130 feet!

Don't forget the Border Bruins pancake breakfast starting at 7:00am in the north parking lot at Boundary Mall (Buy-Low Foods end).

Photos and video will be posted soon.

Six members take swiftwater rescue training, five attend Oliver Spring Training

Six members of Grand Forks Fire/Rescue took part in swiftwater rescue training on the Slocan River May 1 and 2, and are now certified by IRIA as Swiftwater Flood Rescue Technicians, Level 3.

Four are new members of Grand Forks' swiftwater rescue team, while the others were existing members. Grand Forks now has eight certified swiftwater crew.

The same weekend, five members took part in the annual Spring Training seminar held in Oliver. Grand Forks will be hosting the event next year, and plans are already underway -- If this year's numbers hold, we'll be expecting around 400 firefighters plus around 50 more trainers and vendors to be in town for the event!

There is a Spring Training 2010 Photo Album.

Firebells and Fanfare 2010

The members of Grand Forks Fire Rescue have planning underway to host the 2010 "Firebells And Fanfare", an antique fire apparatus show-and-shine.

Firebells and Fanfare was started by the Victoria Fire Department, and they have hosted it a number of times, but the event changes venues from year to year.

The event will take place July 30-August 1, 2010, with antique fire apparatus from all around BC, Alberta, and the Northwest United States.

More information on the event will be posted here at www.gffr.ca over the coming months. If you have an antique that you'd like to bring, please send us an e-mail: firebells2010@gffr.ca

Photos from the 2008 Victoria show can be seen at Firebells And Fanfare 2008 Photo Gallery

See our Firebells And Fanfare Page for more information and the parade route.

9th Annual Ladder-a-thon July 31/August 1

The members of Grand Forks Fire Rescue held their 9th annual Ladder-a-thon at the Overwaitea parking lot on Friday July 31st and Saturday August 1st. This year, funds raised were split between the Grand Forks Food Bank ($1115.40) and the Grand Forks Fire/Rescue Association Antique Restoration fund.

Local band "Bugsy and the Satellite Blues" performed Friday evening.

We had the antiques on display along with Ladder 4, which was our base of operations for the event.

Open House 2009 - October 17th

The members of Grand Forks Fire Rescue held the third annual Open House at Station 4 (2nd Street, downtown Grand Forks) on Saturday, October 17th.

We showed some of our rescue techniques, and had interactive demonstrations that lots of people tried out for themselves.

Fire truck rides were available, and some tried out our fire extinguisher simulator, some of the public as well as some of our local paramedics tried on a set of bunker gear and an air pack to see what it really feels like to be suited up for a call.

2nd street was closed in front of the fire hall during the Open House, and we had some of the trucks on display along with a couple of our antique apparatus. Our Rescue trucks were also set up to show an auto rescue (with help from two volunteers from the crowd and BCAS) and we had our Ladder truck set up to simulate high-angle rope rescue.

We also had our new just-arrived-from-the-printers 2010 calendars on sale.

BC Ambulance Service, BC Forest Service, C.C. Helicopters and Mid-Nytes Towing were also be on hand with there own displays.

We sure hope you had a chance to come down to Station 4 on Saturday to check out everything we had on display! If not make sure to check us out next fall.
